It's adorable. But also I think I need to buy another dog bed for her just in this room.

In the living room

Her favorite hobby in general is looking out the sliding glass door and barking at everything that goes by. (We're working on this, because it is not me or my neighbor's favorite hobby for her.) She usually just stands by the door so she can jump while she's barking, but once she dragged a pillow over and sat on in like a princess as she gazed out the window.

During the day while I'm working she sometimes likes to chill on the couch. Less common for her because she has FOMO and if she's in the living room, she has to see what's happening outside. :P

Her crate is usually in the living room and she sometimes chills there too.

There's currently a pile of blankets on my living room floor (set aside for laundry) and they have currently been claimed by Daisy as her own personal dog bed. She's made a nest and everything. (I originally bought her a dog bed to rest in in the living room but every night it would end up next to the bed so that's where I figured it should live. That, and she was clearly capable of moving it if she so wished.)

In the bedroom

During the day she spends a lot of time sleeping on the bed. At nighttime she will usually only curl up with me in the winter. I think the bed is too open and I'm to restless for her the rest of the year. :P

At night one of her favorite places to sleep is the closet. Due to the shape of my closet, part of it is definitely like a little den for her. When I moved in to my apartment I didn't have a bed for the first day so I slept in my sleeping bag. Then I threw it in the closet so it was out of the way. Daisy has quickly adopted it as her own. I think she likes it especially because the fabric is soft but still cool. Essentially it's the perfect place for a doggo - dark, comfy, cool, and surrounded by the scent of her owner. <3

Recently she has started hanging out under the bed, which is sort of a weird place? There's not a ton of space, she has to army crawl while she's under there. But she's going there voluntarily and she doesn't seem stressed about it so... another hangout to add to the list I guess.

Last but not least is her dog bed. It is right next to the head of the bed, so I can just peer over the edge and see her while I'm in bed. At night it's probably a 50/50 split of whether or not she'll sleep in the bed or the closet.

I know this is sort of a random post, but it was fun to write because I love my Daisy dog. <3 Give your dogs (or other pets!) some extra snuggles on my behalf.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-48061098650730975482022-07-08T23:20:00.001-07:002022-07-08T23:42:09.014-07:00Sippin' Saturday - Wendy's Strawberry Frosty
I thought it would be a fun Saturday tradition to try one of the new, seasonal drinks out there. First up was Wendy's Strawberry Frosty! (I know it's more of an ice cream than a drink... but close enough?)

This was exactly what you would expect it to be. Delicious, of course. I'd still choose a chocolate frosty over a strawberry frosty, but if you are the type of person who prefers strawberry to chocolate in the first place, you will love this! Plus it was sort of fun to eat a strawberry milkshake with a spoon.

(Look at me, master photographer 🤣)

Happy Saturday! Questions and answers from pilots, random ATC conversations, and even videos about crashes. I personally feel more comfortable flying the more information I learn about airplanes. However, if watching analyses of plane crashes will make you more fearful, this playlist may not be for you! If you're into airplanes and flying and such though, you might enjoy these.
You can find the playlist here. Enjoy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-91621098652254233862021-03-08T22:17:00.001-08:002021-03-08T22:17:02.672-08:00Puzzles!
As I mentioned in previous posts, I've really been into puzzles lately! I thought it would be fun to go over and give mini reviews one the ones I've done recently.

Cardinal Puzzles (300 pieces)

Overall, these pieces are thicker than other dollar store puzzle pieces. However, many of the pieces are really similar in shape so you have to rely almost entirely on the picture to put the puzzle together. When I do these puzzles, if I have a large solid section, my rule is that I can't place a piece unless at least two sides fit. However, for $1.00 a puzzle, I still get quite a bit of enjoyment from them! Another thing to note is that the pieces are cut in such a way that you can tell whether a pieces is horizontal or vertical based solely on shape.

I love produce and color gradient puzzles, so this one was definitely fun! I had so much fun putting it together. The colors and patters are distinct enough that you can pretty much pick up a piece and tell which book it belongs to. This doesn't make it "easy" but fun because you always have a next step. It's also gilded, so all of the gold you see is actually shiny. Next time I do this puzzle I will probably actually frame it. But we'll see. It was so much fun that I want to do it over and over again!

Puzzlebug

These are all 500 piece dollar store puzzles. The pieces are pretty thin, which means the pieces often come already bent, or once even, broken. It's also not uncommon for these puzzles to be missing a piece. I legitimately have better luck getting complete puzzles from thrift stores than I do from these new dollar store puzzles. While these aren't the best quality, they are still super fun to do! And to get a couple hours of entertainment for $1.00, they're a great value! (I also wanted to note that these pieces are cut in such a way that you can tell whether they are horizontal or vertical solely based on shape.)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The pieces are very thin - about as thick as a cereal box. They are quite sturdy though, none of them were bent (and they don't seem like they'd bend easily). This puzzle was unique in that it has letters printed on the back. This was helpful because you could look at the back of the piece and 1) know the orientation of the piece [where the letter is right-side-up] and 2) know which section (of six) the piece belonged in. The puzzle also came with a poster that had the letters on the back a well. Poster was great because there wasn't much of an image on the box (only a thumbnail really).

This puzzle cost me $.99 at my local thrift store. Although it looks beautiful in the image above, it really sucks as a puzzle image. It's quite dark and there is a lot of brown. Without the letters on the back, I'm not sure if I would have been able to complete the puzzle. Even with all of the cheats, it still wasn't very fun to put together.

Master Pieces

These pieces were thick/good quality and were quite unique. Not just the typical puzzle shape, but more varied (but still grid-like) shapes. So ones with three outs and one in; four outs; four ins; two outs next to each other, etc. They also varied in size quite a bit which made it pretty fun.

I love the image of this puzzle and the quality of it. It was very fun to do. However, I HATE the texture. It is meant to have a glow in the dark component, and the glow in the dark paint has a grainy, almost sandpaper-like texture that makes me cringe just thinking about it. (The glow in the dark doesn't even work, but since I got it for $.50 at a thrift store, I didn't expect it to.) If it were a normal, smooth puzzle, I'd probably keep this one to do over and over again.

Thank you for joining me on this nerdy journey through puzzles. Sometimes this includes an estate sale. Usually this includes the Dollar Tree, Goodwill, and ARC Thrift Stores. I've also tried a grocery store for puzzles, and maybe I'll try craft stores going forward. But I'm having enough luck with the Dollar Tree and the thrift stores, that I probably won't need to. <3

I also usually get a fun breakfast or lunch. (Such as Dunkin' Donuts or Taco Bell, since I don't go there often.) And then I get a Route 44 Cherry Coke from Sonic and go home and do a couple of puzzles. It's fun and relaxing and gets me off of my computer and out of the house.

Here are the puzzles I got from ARC Thrift Store (no luck at Goodwill this week). The two on the right are made by Master Pieces, which are great quality. The butterfly one is beautiful and only cost me $.50. The Memory Lane one was $1.99. And I'm actually really excited about the Colorado Rockies one. How unique and fun is that?! It was also only $.99. I've already done the butterfly one, and will probably do the other two this week or weekend.

I also really like going to the Dollar Tree and seeing if they have any new puzzles out that week, and they never fail to disappoint. The quality isn't the best, but for $1.00 they provide me with a lot of entertainment! And their pictures are so pretty. This week I got six new 300 piece Cardinal puzzles, and one 500 piece Cardinal Cinderella puzzle. I've already done three of these. <3 I just love how colorful they are and how pretty the boxes looked when stacked. They're also small enough that you can fit all the pieces in a sandwich bag, which is convenient.

Here's a picture of my "to-do" shelf as of 2/27. If you feel like watching other people play The Sims, this list is for you. I enjoy watching these because I learn many new ways to play. Plus other people just do things differently than I do. If you're not the biggest fan of The Sims I'd still recommend the videos by Gray Still Plays. They're quite entertaining.
You can find the playlist here. Enjoy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-26337575669248670012021-01-17T19:17:00.002-08:002021-01-17T19:17:01.384-08:00Target Christmas Clearance Haul
This is from like two weeks ago, but better late than never! I had to go to Target for something and while I was there I decided to check out the Christmas clearance. Since I went there in the first few days of January, I honestly wasn't expecting there to be much left. But I managed to find a few goodies!

My dog is in the picture because she has to be a part of everything. :P Also, not sure why I took the picture with the face of the cute penguin plates covered.

As you can see, I found:

A super cute light-up penguin that will be an adorable addition to my porch next year. ($5.00)

Two reindeer ornaments that I had actually pinned as wishes while they were full price. <3 ($1.50 each)

Two adorable penguin plates. I found the picture from Target.com so you can see it's whole face. Not as clearanced as everything else, but still delicious. ($2.58)

Have you gotten anything fun from Target lately? I usually buy most of my holiday decorations (for any holiday) after each season so I can have cheap ones for next year. :) Every year I pick up a few fun finds and my collection grows just a little bit more. <3

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-88943207978632292122021-01-16T18:26:00.002-08:002021-01-16T18:26:35.207-08:00Week In Review January 16, 2021
No blog posts this week, but hopefully that will improve. :) Blogging gives me motivation to, you know, do things.

Current faves:

Oreos and milk. There are lots of sniffs for her (which is mentally stimulating, I think), and she gets to socialize with other dogs. A lot of this info is still great, which is why I'm sharing it. Thankfully, Daisy has gotten a lot less hyperactive and anxious now that we're settled into our apartment.)

Don't judge me too much, but sometimes staying home all day with Daisy drives me a little... crazy. She has a lot of energy and I'm very much a couch potato. Here's how one of our more successful days went - I discovered that frequent (but short) training sessions, as well as distracting toys, helped a lot.

Distracting Toys Ideas:
Frozen Kong filled with peanut butter
Frozen Kong bone filled with peanut butter
Kong stuffed with beef treats
Kong bone stuffed with training treats
Webbed ball stuffed with training treats (or kibble)
Webbed "drumstick" filled with crunchy treats
Rawhide roll
Bull stick
Beef Knee Cap
Infinite Bento Ball

6:00 Wake up and go for 45 minute walk
6:45 Feed Daisy, give medicine
8:00 Five minute training session (I like this book for teaching the basics and this website for other ideas)
8:05 Give distracting toy (And if neccessary, prepare/freeze another one)
Repeat every hour :P
12:00 Take outside to potty
4:00 Go on a 30 minute walkUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-5153939217351711052018-08-26T14:45:00.000-07:002018-08-26T14:45:02.840-07:00Schnoodle Sunday - Doggie ComicsI just discovered Off the Leash comics, and they're adorable! Sorry for the inconsistent posting - I've been focusing on my book blog (akbookworm.com, if you want to check it out). Since "Reading Wednesday" has been moved to AKBookworm, here's "Watch It Wednesday" to take its place. Here are random YouTube videos I discovered and enjoyed. They're not necessarily new, but they were new to me. I hope you enjoy!

Some really awesome nail art:
I just discovered these mashups, and they're great! This one is my favorite so far:

Apparently pumpkin spice is already back? Here's why we like it so much:

This YouTube channel is in Spanish! I find it a good way to practice my listening, since I've seen similar videos on English channels... so I have some context as to what's going on!

Blast from the Past
(The oldest video on my "Liked Videos" list)

This is a really, really, stupid video. But I've never been able to watch it without laughing!
Here I hope to feature all aspects of a makeover - from hair and nails to fitness and happiness. Today I want to share with you two of my favorite happiness podcasts - they go over the science of how to be happy and share many great tips to incorporate into your everyday life.

My friend recommended The Science of Happiness. In this podcast they have a "guinea pig" (usually a really interesting person) and have them try a happiness activity from The Greater Good Science Center. They introduce the activity and discuss the person's experience. In the second half of the podcast, they go behind the science of why each particular activity makes someone happy.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin is a little less science based, but is still fantastic. Gretchen and her sister give weekly happiness tips (I love these!) and discuss different aspects of happiness and hurdles throughout their lives. They also focus on creating good habits.

What's your favorite happiness-themed podcast? (Or, what podcasts make you happy?)

We moved in the middle of that, which didn't help either of our stress levels. :P But I did a lot of learning and growing as a dog owner, and Daisy did a lot of calming and relaxing as we settled into a daily routine. I'm so glad I have her in my life, even if she drives me crazy every once in a while.
Here's just a funny post for you about things my dog and I have in common.
So until then, you'll probably see more of these posts. :)

I'm not sure if I've shared the following drink with you, but I've been enjoying it enough lately that I'm going to share it anyways.

This drink is very, very sweet, so if that's not your thing, you won't like this drink. However, if you're a fan of the white mocha, then this is a great alternative for summer! Same flavors, caffeine rush, and sugar rush, but it won't make you miserably hot when it's already 115+ outside.
What's your favorite frappuccino at Starbucks?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1926358958825918020.post-61371247096315100352018-08-16T21:35:00.001-07:002018-08-16T21:35:50.849-07:00Thrifty Thursday - August 16, 2018Welcome to Thrifty Thursday! I hope to make this a regular feature where I share different ways to save money and make some extra! A couple of caveats:
* Some of these deals may only be applicable locally (I'm in the Phoenix, AZ area)
* Some of these deals may not be available to everyone. Sometimes apps give custom deals.
* I'm new to this! So there's a lot for me to learn, budget-wise.

Ways to Earn

Sell Stuff on Ebay - This week's idea - sell unused dog toys. My dog ended up with way more than any she would ever use. On to Ebay they go!

Use Long Game - If you save using this app (it's FDIC insured), you get points that you can use to play virtual games... that have real rewards! I earned $3, which isn't much, but is something.

Follow Up on Fees/Charges - Stay on top of things! And don't be afraid to ask what unknown or unexpected charges are. This can help you save (or recoup) some cash.

IBotta - I don't treat these like coupons - I treat it like I earn something in exchange for buying something. So usually if I wouldn't buy it at the full price anyways, I'm not going to buy the product for IBotta. I also try to focus on $$ rewards instead of cent rewards.
(Don't have IBotta? You can use my referral link here - this will help both of us earn some extra cash!)
Bonuses I'm going to try for:
Back to Basics Bonus - Receive $5 when you redeem 4 different offers.
Best Foods Real Ketchup and Mayonnaise - Receive a total of $4 when you buy both.

Ways to Save

Fry's Friday Freebies - If you have the Fry's app, every week they have a coupon for something free on Friday. Two weeks ago I got a free box of mac and cheese. Yum!

Also, Nabisco snack crackers are 99 cents a box on Friday/Saturday. (Limit 5, I think)

I'm a brand new dog owner, so I'm pretty in over my head. (Brand new as in, I didn't even have a dog growing up.) Keep in mind that I'm not crazy experienced, but that my fresh eyes will hopefully provide you with solutions you otherwise wouldn't have thought of.

My dog manifested her anxiety as hyperactivity. She was all over the place, all the time. If I let her wander my apartment she'd walk in circles through the living room and kitchen, whining all the while. Even after hours (!) of walks she wouldn't lay down and if we got her calm and resting, you could see that her mind was still going a million miles an hour. Some of it is likely due to the fact that I was her fourth household in a month, and some if it is possibly just her nature. Here's what I've discovered helps. (Discovered with the help of my vet, my friends, and trial-and-error.)

1. Go to the vet
The first day I had Daisy I took her to the vet. I didn't know that her behavior was abnormal for a dog, but within a couple of minutes the vet technician asked me about her behavior at home and suggested putting her on anti-anxiety medications. Daisy was prescribed a long-term anti-anxiety medication (that even humans take) and a short-term medication to take until the long-term one kicked in.

After a couple of days of taking the medication we could see improvement but tell that she was still super on-edge. (I didn't make this determination on my own - my dog-experienced friend helped because she had a better idea of what was normal for a dog.) With the permission of the vet we doubled her Xanax and voila! a dog that had a normal energy level and attention span for a teenaged dog. (Two human years, teenage in terms of dog development.)

I do want to emphasize that her energy wasn't a healthy, doggy energy or even a super excited puppy like energy. It was an unhealthy I-can't-slow-down-or-focus-or-relax sort of energy. I understand that dogs have a lot of needs that can help with hyperactivity in non-anxious dogs. Some of these are even listed below. :)

2. Wear them out
Dogs need a lot of time walking and spending their energy. I spend about an hour a day walking Daisy. She'd be happy to go for hours and hours and hours, but unfortunately her human isn't quite in shape enough for that. :) To help, she also wears a (slightly weighted) backpack while we're on our walks. This helps her focus since dogs are meant to have jobs. It also helps wear her out a little faster so she's doesn't have a lot of excess energy.

3. Set boundaries
As I mentioned above, when I first got her I let her have almost free reign of the apartment. And she would just cruise around in circles, from room to room, whining. She struggled a lot with all the stimulation around her. When my dog-experienced friend came over to help she noticed this and hooked Daisy's leash to my coffee table, within reach of water, Daisy's crate, a pet bed, and dog toys. Suddenly Daisy had access to everything she could need, but only a limited range of motion. This helped her calm down a lot! It also helped her understand that the humans set the rules - which I believe took that uncertainty off her mind. (This was only while someone was home and she was under supervision - we wouldn't want her leash to get caught!)

No, I don't plan to keep her on the leash by the coffee table forever. Once she has proved she is comfortable with that space and is able to calm down and obey within it, I will slowly open up the apartment to her. It's just going to take some time.

4. Find their trigger areas
Every time my dog got on the couch she thought it was playtime. Not nice, cuddly, tug-of-war playtime, but jumping, lunging, mouthing playtime. Suddenly she owned that space and humans better be out of her way! Not petting her? She'll lunge towards your face or climb behind you on the couch or mouth your arm. (She wasn't agressive, just chose to communicate with her teeth.) For a while I tried teaching her to behave, but nothing worked. (I should also mention that due to her anxiety, she had very little interest in any toys I would bring out to distract her.) Until I spoke with my friend, it never occured to me to just ban the couch from Daisy's allowed perimeter. And man, what a difference that made! Just by eliminating the area where Daisy freaked out the most, her behavior improved quite a bit.
5. Training
Although Daisy was houstrained and crate trained (yay!) she didn't seem to have much in the ways of basic training like HEEL, SIT, STAY, etc. For the first week or so, every time she'd get anxious we would pull her aside and train for a while. We used a clicker and treats, and just the mental excersize helped her a lot. We used HEEL and COME a lot - my friend would take Daisy on a leash around the apartment. Every time Daisy pulled on the leash, my friend would turn a different direction and say COME. When Daisy did, she'd get a click and a treat. We made eventually made this more complicated by opening the front and patio doors - she wanted to pull toward them but had to quickly learn to ignore them.

I now spend 30 minutes or so a day training Daisy on new skills or reinforcing old ones. These two 15-minutes sessions were easy to add in to our day, and helps with her anxiety quite a bit.

6. Toys
My vet pointed out that Daisy needed things to occupy her mind. She suggested puzzle toys - usually toys that dispense treats if a dog takes the time to work them out. My dog seems to be more occupied by bones and chews than by puzzle toys, so I use a lot of these as well. Listed below are the toys I've tried and had at least some success with, in order from most effective to least effective. Most effective would be the toy/treat that occupied Daisy the longest.
- Kneecaps
- Bullsticks
- Rawhide stick
- Kong filled with peanut butter
- Treat dispensing puzzle shaped like a drumstick

7. Patience
Have lots and lots of patience! Keep up with your boundaries and training and your dog will soon learn them! (And learn that they can't outlast you.) Keeping a calm voice will help them be calm - being anxious yourself doesn't help their anxiety! Anger doesn't help either.

8. Set a schedule and stick to it
Try to set a schedule and stick to it. This will help them learn the pattern of their new life and take away just one more uncertainty. Try to schedule walks, feeding time, training, play time, and bedtime. Of course it's not going to be perfect, especially with our human schedules being so inconsistent, but try to keep it the same as much as you can.

9. Get a bark collar
The bark collar I have just beeps if Daisy makes a noise - the beep gets longer if she barks too many times in succession. This helps so much! Before the collar, Daisy would just keep working herself up, getting caught in a spiral of low whining then desperate whining and then barking. Even if I ignored her, she wouldn't pull out of it. This collar is great because the simple beep draws her attention away from her distress and snaps her out of her mood. (It's also great because I don't have to worry about bothering my neighbors while I'm not home!)

10. Keep learning
I've beeing doing a lot of reading, a lot of YouTube video watching, and a lot of talking with those who are experienced with dogs. The more I learn, the better things are getting for both Daisy and I - which is great!
